Happening in LH The Program of Change: We begin a 5 part series to discuss racism. it's not a 'you are right or you are wrong' program. It's a challenge to learn and develop a change of thought. We want to create a 'trust tree' for questions and conversations that might help Lake Highlands be a little bit better.
You must RSVP to receive the link to join the discussion.
August 20th, we dive into Part 2 of 5.

THE POWER OF CHANGE Part 2 of 5 Events Thursday August 20th, starting at 11:30 AM Deep Dive with Dr. Sheron C. Patterson
White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism
Dr. Sheron C. Patterson is the Senior Pastor at The Park United Methodist Church located in historic Hamilton Park [NE Corner of 75 at Forest Lane]. Dr. Patterson is a dynamic speaker, preacher, innovator. She is currently leading a study of White Fragility with numerous regional Methodist pastors. She will bring here insight, knowledge, education, and experience into the book to give us a deep dive.
The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality.
It's another book in our series contemplating change and how we can change.
THE POWER OF CHANGE PRESENTS “White Ally Virtual Mentoring Program” Partnership between the Lake Highlands Chamber & Dr. Sheron Patterson
White Ally Defined- “… it is an ongoing and lifelong process that involves a lot of work. A white ally acknowledges the limits of her/his/their knowledge about other people’s experiences but does not use that as a reason not to think and/or act. A white ally does not remain silent but confronts racism as it comes up daily, but also seeks to deconstruct it institutionally and live in a way that challenges systemic oppression, at the risk of experiencing some of that oppression. Being a white ally entails building relationships with both people of color, and with white people to challenge them in their thinking about race. White allies don’t have it all figured out but are deeply committed to non-complacency.” Dismantle Collective
What- The White Ally Mentoring Program is for white people who are interested in becoming a part of the solution to the racial problems in America. It is their opportunity to listen and learn in a “safe” environment under the mentorship of an African American who is committed to the cause of community building. The program is action focused. Participants are expected to immediately act in their personal lives, workplaces, homes, communities, and larger arenas. Accountability is built into the program, and participants will check in with the mentor two months after the group sessions to share their progress. Although the mentor is an ordained pastor, this is not a church or religious program. Curriculum for this program is based on the book “White Fragility” by Robin Diangelo, and websites, whiteallytoolkit.com, Race+JusticeEssentials.com, and DismantleCollective.org
Why- America is racially polarized. We must take responsibility to create positive change. When- 1. One on One sessions September 14-17, 2020, times TBD 2. Session One (small groups of 5 or less) Tuesday, September 22, 2020, noon- 1:00 pm 3. Session Two Tuesday, (small groups of 5 or less) September 29, 2020, noon-1:00 pm 4. Follow- up session, Tuesday, October 6, 2020, noon-1:00 pm 5. Check-in session, Tuesday, November 3, 2020, noon-1:00 pm
· All meetings to be held via Zoom call until further notice
Who is the Mentor?– Dr. Sheron C. Patterson is familiar to many North Texans as the “Relationship Expert” on “Good Morning Texas” on WFAA for seven years. She is the author of numerous self-help books, and her latest book, “Lead Yourself Now,” has been used to train the top leaders of the Dallas Sheriff’s department, young executives at Methodist Health System and countless schools and churches. She is a history maker, as the first African American to ordained in this region of the United Methodist Church. As the pastor of Hamilton Park United Methodist Church, which neighbors Lake Highland, she ensures that her community is cared for with outreach in the form of free COVID-19 testing to daily hot meals for the hungry. Dr. Patterson has been married to Robert Patterson for 35 years and they have two adult children.
Cost- Cost per participant is $250.00. A portion of this will assist the Community Engagement Program at Hamilton Park United Methodist Church.
How To Apply– The first cohort of five is forming now. Entrance into the program is three paragraphs on the following questions. Why do you want to become a white ally? How do you know that you are willing to make changes in your thoughts and actions? What excites you about becoming an action oriented and accountable white ally?
